ALBUM COVER DESIGN
Graphic Designer & Art Director
Visual interpretation and single-cover design inspired by the track “Waltzing Back” by the American dream-pop band No Vacation. The project explores how surrealist imagery, texture gating, and custom expressive typography can translate the ethereal soundscapes and underlying emotional tension of a musical piece into a cohesive, tactile square-format composition.
Musically, the track features a dream-like, slow-tempo atmosphere that evokes an immediate sense of stillness and vastness, reminiscent of the reflective quietude of the 'blue hour'. However, beneath this soothing melodic surface, the lyrics introduce deep emotional vulnerability, doubt, and hesitation. The design direction sought to capture this exact duality, balancing sonic calmness with psychological tension.
To translate these abstract auditory moods into concrete visual metaphors, a thorough word-association and mood-boarding phase was conducted. Key thematic anchors emerged: the vast, distant horizon representing both boundless freedom and the terrifying uncertainty of the future, paired with organic textures to evoke an overarching sense of psychological transition.
Phase 1: Lyric analysis, thematic word assoication, and visual mood-boarding.
Phase 2: Source asset isolation - deconstrucuing the core visual metaphors of emotional transition, connection, and psycholocial fragility.
Phase 3: Technical execution utilising high-resolution canvas setting, precise layer blending, and advanced masking.
THE COMPOSITION & SYMBOLISM
The final multi-layered Photoshop composition synthesises three distinct symbolic pillars to mirror the track's narrative arc: the vast ocean horizon capturing emotional transition, the reaching hands embodying hesitation and connection, and a fractured ice overlay to represent emotional fragility and psychological 'freezing' from anxiety.

DIGITAL COMPOSITION & TEXTURE GATING
Moving beyond basic collage, the artwork relies heavily on precise mask manipulation and blending modes in Adobe Photoshop. Working at a crisp print resolution of 320 ppi, the elements were woven together using texture gating. A subtle motion blur was introduced to the reaching hands, injecting a quiet sense of urgency to signal that this fleeting moment of connection is actively dissolving.
Phase 3: Technical execution utilising high-resolution canvas setting, precise layer blending, and advanced masking.
Established digital typefaces failed to echo the unique emotional fragility of the concept. Moving away from standard fonts, the artist name and track title were completely rendered through custom hand-lettering. The final typography features uneven mechanical angles, fluidly irregular kerning, and shifting letter heights. These deliberate imperfections mirror the jagged fissures of the fractured ice, visually amplifying the atmosphere of uncertainty.
Phase 4: Analogue development - exploring expressive brush-pen letterforms and selecting raw details to form a cohesive typographic system.
I managed the creative transformation of audio to visual. My responsibilities included song analysis, conceptual mood-boarding, image synthesis in Adobe Photoshop, and the production of a bespoke hand-lettered typographic system.
